kmoorman,
Dr. Garrett began her career in Computer Science as a graduate student at the University of Kentucky. While there, she developed an algorithm used in Doppler medical imaging. Her solution helped to resolve a large number of false readings and offered a non-invasive technique for measuring blood flow through the heart.
Additionally, her work with splines created a new algorithm that improved upon the standard cubic spline, which tended to deform under certain conditions. The improved algorithm was of great use in the shipbuilding industry.
From 1985 to 2014, Dr. Garrett taught at Transylvania University. She taught graphics, web design, cryptology, database management systems and many more courses.
“The most basic thing we teach is problem solving. And that’s the cornerstone of a liberal arts education.”
